End of July, who knows when anymore...
July was a busy month! We had a lot going on. We hosted our first visitors - cousins and grandparents from Texas. And everyone just about fitted in! Last time we put the boys all together in one room there was lots of fighting and arguing, so I was a little worried about it but there was not a peep out of them this time. Of course they are much older, but I think the extra space helped, a lot!
We were quite busy that week! We went to the fair... these pictures make me laugh. I bought the kids a giant funnel cake to sample some fair food. The time stamp between the two pictures was about three minutes. And as bored as Nicholas looks at the beginning and the end, he was 100% involved and engaged in the middle!
We went to the beach. I don't like the beach! So that was our obligatory once a year visit. No pictures because I'm a nervous wreck on the beach, constantly counting heads and trying to keep track of them all.
We baptised Kate! Her eighth birthday was in May, so it was due. We had told everyone not to even think about it until after we moved, and then it was chaos for a while and I was incapable of organising anything (which is a general position for me, not just true after we move), and then when we found out family would be in town it made sense to do it then. So we waited until the end of July.
And the day after her baptism we went camping! Our Texas cousins wanted to see seqouias so we went back to Sequoia National Park where we camped last summer. And those trees are well worth a second visit! We had a great couple of days out in the woods.
This boy loves a good stick. All summer he has played out in the desert wasteland of the back garden quite happily, doing ninja routines with his stick. He gets really upset if his sticks get lost. Once Adam threw his stick in the pool and he was absolutely distraught. So he loved being out in the woods, surrounded by sticks. He spent most of the day every day looking for the best stick possible. And then we had to take it back to the campsite with us. And every night, because we are too cheap to buy firewood, we sent the kids out foraging for firewood and they never quite found enough. And we burned his stick, every night. And when he got up and looked for his stick first thing and found what we'd done, he was mad at us. Every day.
When everyone had gone home we finally got around to giving Kate some birthday presents! She was a total star about waiting. As lame as it was that it took us two and half months to get around to her birthday, I was actually really impressed with how she handled it. She never complained about the wait and had a very mature understanding that the situation was about more than her birthday. We may have taken advantage of how compliant she was, because writing this has reminded me that I still owe her a birthday cake!
