Her birthday coincided with the school Skate Night at the roller rink... so I took Kate and Ellie skating for her birthday. Ellie is a veteran skater (having got roller skates from Nana for her 7th birthday) and Kate cannot take a single step without falling down. But she wanted to go, so off we went. Instead of hiring skates for her I hired a walker on wheels, so she essentially scooted around the rink behind it. She had a fabulous time, and now believes that she can skate, and goes out on her skates almost daily. She's never made it more than four feet past the front door without falling down, but she won't stop trying!
I made her favourite dinner (salmon pasta and red peppers in a cream sauce), and in the process of that, I asked her to get me some pasta out of the pantry. As she was turning around from the pantry, she fell, hit her chin on the table on the way down, and bit through her tongue on both sides! I watched it all unfold... there was no reason at all for her to fall down, but somehow she managed it. That is Kate all over. She goes through life at high speed - why walk when you can dash? - and as a result she is always falling over and bumping into things. So she was a bit tearful through dinner! Fortunately for her we weren't doing cake and ice cream until the weekend so by the time we got to eat cake she was pretty well healed up and could enjoy it!
My favourite part about Kate's birthday was Ellie. Kate has been asking for more chapter books so Ellie secretly picked out some books, ordered them from the school book order, paid for them herself, and couldn't wait to give them to Kate on her birthday. Being Ellie she made a beautiful hand made card for Kate too, telling her how sweet she is and how much she loves having her for a sister. Kate couldn't stop beaming as she read it. It was the sweetest moment!
