Road trip!

Back in October we took a crazy road trip to Utah for Jeff's cousin's wedding. A few days before we were due to leave, I came down with a bad cold and sore throat, but it cleared up in a couple of days. Two days before we were due to leave, Jeff started showing symptoms of the same thing. We weren't bothered at all, we knew it would clear up in a couple of days...  except that it didn't. He got worse and worse and by the night before we were due to leave, he was as ill as I've ever seen him, in all our years of marriage! I honestly thought we weren't going to go, and I started to gently prepare the kids with the thought that because Dad was so ill, we might have to stay home.

The day we were driving out, Kate woke up bright and early and bounced into our room and said 'Is Daddy coming with us?' There was no question in her mind that we were still going to go, never mind what Dad did! And in the event, Jeff went to Urgent Care that morning and got himself a diagnosis - actual flu! Not man-flu! - and a prescription, and off we went.

In hindsight, he was so sick that he was not thinking at all clearly and we should not have gone! I drove most of the way there (and most of the way home) while he lay in a heap in the passenger seat. It was rough!

The wedding was on Saturday and was lovely. We went everywhere with a giant bag of prescription and over the counter medications, and Jeff kept himself dosed which was the only way he stayed on his feet! But the kids had a wonderful, wonderful time playing with cousins around the temple.

It's almost impossible to get all cousins looking at the camera at the same time! They are such a fun bunch.

We went and had a late lunch at the top of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, mostly because it was the absolute closest place with food and I don't think Jeff could have made it anywhere else! There's a great view of the temple from there, the kids were so excited to be in Salt Lake and see it.

On Sunday, we spent some time and did Temple Square properly. We went to an organ recital in the Tabernacle which was loads of fun. The pipes got a good workout, it was great!

We also spent some time doing a quick tour of some family history spots. We drove past the house where Jeff grew up, and we were telling the kids about the time he broke his leg in the back yard and couldn't get anyone's attention. He had to crawl around to the front and up the steps to the front door to get let in! We were joking about recreating the incident and taking a picture, when the current owner of the house came out. He let us take a picture - I wasn't bold enough to ask whether we could recreate the crawling up the steps part!

Though it would have been funny. I kind of wish we had!
