Ellie is in 4th grade this year and so she gets to start violin at school. Last week we went out and got her a violin (of course she needs a 1/2 size and doesn't fit Adam's 3/4 size). Adam is in intermediate strings this year, and not beginner strings, and he has actually done some practice at home- only twice so far, but this means he has equalled the number of times he practiced last year and we're still only in September! The music is harder and so he recognises that he needs to practice.
On Friday night, he pulled his violin out to do some practice. Ellie hasn't had a violin lesson yet but she pulled hers out too and started scraping away. And although the sound from both of them was absolutely cacophonous, it made my heart happy to hear two beginner musicians having a go.
And then Jeff came downstairs, pulled out the 4/4 size that we have, which hasn't been tuned in at least eight years, and he started scraping away too and claimed he was 'fiddling'. My heart was not so happy then. It was a level of out of tune that I couldn't take!
School lessons by themselves are not enough to achieve anything on the violin. So we are thinking about what we can do, and whether violin is going to be a long term investment of our time or not. But at this stage I am just happy that we have instruments in the house. We might be taking baby steps but we are on the right road!
