This may not sound like an exciting update but it really, truly, is.
When we were renovating we stripped all the rooms down to bare walls, which meant that all the rods and hooks and whatever came out of the closets so that the walls could be textured.
Which, in turn, meant that when we moved in we had nowhere to put anything. It was a bit of a nightmare, to be honest! The coat cupboard was just a heaving pile of coats and games, about five feet tall. You couldn't find anything in there without digging through the whole thing.
The bedroom closets were even worse. We bought cheap clothes racks to tide us over, but they were pretty rubbish and wobbly and didn't hold everything. So the closets were all a mess, for quite a while.
We did ours first (neither of us could stand it for very long) and we let the kids suffer longer. Not that they were suffering much, I think they were quite happy just throwing things in a heap on the floor of their closets, it's what they normally do!
Just look at that.... a whole empty shelf! Bliss.
Between Christmas and New Year Jeff got down to business and built out all the other closets. We have a functioning coat cupboard once more.
When we knocked out the platform we didn't change the height of the cupboard, so this is an extra tall closet... which means there's extra game storage in there. None of us except Jeff can reach it, but it is all tidy and put away so I don't even care!
The second downstairs coat closet got turned into an extra pantry, which means that there is actual cupboard space in the other pantry now! Bonus all around.
I went in to the girl's wardrobe today to take this picture and found all kinds of crazy going on on the shelves; one of the shelves is barely containing a hair accessories explosion and there's no way two little girls need that amount of pyjamas; but they seem to know where everything is and that is all I can ask for!
The boys' room was a little tricky; it's a long narrow space rather than a proper walk-in. After lots of talking about it we went with a long rod with shelves at one end. This looks tidy but only because I took the overflowing pile of laundry-that-was-not-anywhere-near-the laundry-basket out of shot for this picture.
So the kids have no excuse for flinging their clothes all over the floor any more. But they still do.
