Monarch Butterfly Day

Today was Monarch Butterfly Day at the local park. It was started five years ago by a lady who lives in our neighbourhood, and when we went to the very first one five years ago, I think it was just us and a few other families from the neighbourhood. Boy has it changed! It was packed, with every kind of event, balloon guys, face painting, puppet shows, you name it. I am a cheapskate however and so we only did the free events, but there were plenty of them.

The kids made bracelets showing the life cycle of a butterfly.

We coloured in butterflies.

But the highlight has to be the butterfly tent, and actually seeing the butterflies up close. The kids loved it. Ellie's butterfly was feeding from the watermelon.

Notice that we did not trust Nicholas to hold a butterfly!!

We finished by making butterflies to take home. Adam helped Nicholas to make his, it was cute to watch him concentrate so hard. And I learned from watching them that I really need to teach Nicholas how to hold a crayon properly!

He was justifiably proud of his finished butterfly!

How fun! I didn't know about this, but would have loved to bring my boys! Maybe next year :) Is it the same day every year?
